DRAGON MONTH - ROUND 2
Well everyone, round 1 of our exciting Dragon Month battles has come to an end and the fights were much more brutal than we ever first realized. Tooth and scale and forum posts were flying this way and that, and we have heard deep and convincing arguments from both sides. In the end, however, there can only be one winner, and you guys were the deciding factor. So let’s take a look at how the battles actually panned out.

Battle 1 Shivan Dragon VS Eternal Dragon
This battle, surprisingly enough, trumped Onyxia V Vox for the position of closest battle in round one. Shivan is a poster boy for Magic: The Gathering, while Eternal Dragon is the driving plot force behind Dragon Ball Z. The arguments we heard were many, but the loudest were about how weak the Eternal Dragon was.
“Eternal dragon was OHKO'd by Piccolo in DB and couldn't even beat Vegeta/Nappa in the beginning of Z. He's got a lot of restorative power, but in terms of destructive capabilities, he's pretty low on the playing field.” –Drakonis Mage
“Shivan Dragon is a BEAST! An OG! He invented Firebreathing! Eternal Dragon doesn't even fight... That one's a no brainer.” JeremyFuentes_FTW
The Eternal Dragon’s passive nature is what killed this battle for him. He has rarely been shown to fight, and merely retreats from existence when not needed. He does have infinite power, including the ability to simply wish Shivan Dragon away, however much like a genie he needs someone else to wish that for him, and we strive for impartiality here over at TCGplayer (also… we needed those wishes for solid gold time machines).
Shivan on the other hand has never been a passive beast, and if game play and flavor states anything, may be one of the most aggressive combatants in our standings. In all actuality, Shivan most likely is less powerful than Eternal Dragon, but this isn’t a contest of “who is the most powerful” this is a contest of “who would win in a fight” (…also a popularity contest…) and the Eternal Dragon would simply sit there while Shivan tore him to pieces…..
…er… that is if he got the chance to. You see the TCGplayer staff actually couldn’t find all 7 Dragon Balls before the match began. Oh we tried, but I think there was one in Norway or something. So, we didn’t even have the ability to summon the Eternal Dragon for the battle… so Shivan won on a no-show technicality. Uh… our bad.
Battle 2 Charizard VS Terra Kahn
This battle was a seat of some controversy over at the office. Everyone here thought that there was no way Charizard could win. I mean Terra Kahn is the size of a building, and he breathes radioactive fire, and he has the rage of the ancient dinosaurs, and other crazy stuff like that! Imagine our surprise when this was the most one sided battle in all of round one, and it went to Charizard making Charizard one heck of an underdog victor.
“Charizard's statistics are just brutal and his ability to fly and combine his attacks with fire is just too much to bare. I vote for Charizard.” -leeskiowns
“Umm...Does Rock Smash FTW mean anything to you?” –Cybertech134
It seems as though “the bigger they are the harder they fall” rang true in this battle. Terra Kahn was huge, however huge beasties move slowly, and have a hard time swatting at things that are smaller than them. If you also want to play it by the numbers, Terra Kahn has very few HP and in the Monsterpocalypse world, ANY attack that hits successfully takes off one HP.
Charizard unbeknownst to all of us also had the attacks to bring Terra Kahn down. Terra Kahn’s scales are like concrete, but Charizard has a devastatingly powerful Rock Smash. Terra Kahn’s breathes fire but Charizard is largely immune to fire. Terra Kahn is primarily a close range attacker, but Charizard can fly and evade his attacks. Still, Charizard was puny compared to Terra Kahn and this battle was not what you expected.
In the end this was a battle of attrition. Terra Kahn would spray radioactive beams and swipe at Charizard as Charizard darted this way and that around our stadium. Charizard’s attacks would hit Terra Kahn square on but barely do any damage to the beast, while Terra Kahn’s attacks whiffed over and over again, causing massive property damage to our brand new TCGplayer stadium. The battle lasted for a good portion of the week, and when the dust cloud clears we were down one stadium, and several of the spectators in the audience. Terra Kahn had tired himself out, and without the aid of destroying a downtown city block, he did not have the energy to enter his hyper form. We quickly chartered the National Guard to move him out of our rubble stadium before he woke up, and gave the title to Charizard.
Battle 3 Blue Dragon VS Blue Eyes White Dragon
We thought of seeding these two together because they were both blue in some aspect, but in the end this battle seemed to be pretty cut and dry. It was a landslide victory for Blue Eyes in this anime v anime, videogame v videogame, card game v card game battle. In the end, it was Blue Eyes’s popularity and raw power that won him the battle, something that Blue Dragon just hasn’t been around long enough to grasp.
“The iconic image of Yu-gi-oh!, Blue Eyes White Dragon definitely inspires fantasy gamers everywhere.” –Falkor
“BEWD simply because these days it's ridiculously easy to summon, has 3000 ATK, has support cards and fusions, and belongs to Seto Awesome Kaiba. The other dragon ain't got a chance.” –Marzbar
Blue Dragon is a shadow come to life, a shadow of a boy named Shu, and this is in fact his biggest weakness. Though it is true, that in the Blue Dragon RCPG, Shu does not need to be alive for Blue Dragon to be on the field, in terms of story and flavor Blue Dragon cannot exist without Shu. The arguments we all heard were about how Blue Eyes White Dragon would easily take out Shu in the first few minutes of the battle, thus taking out Blue Dragon with him.
Blue Eyes on the other hand is just a tank of a dragon, boasting power, power, and more power. It flies, it has a gigantic laser breath weapon that puts some DBZ characters to shame, it can fuse with others of its kind, and if you want to talk about characters it is dependent on, Seto Kaiba would probably beat up Shu and take his lunch money. Blue Dragon can fight as hard as he likes but Blue Eyes will get through to Shu eventually.
…and that is how the battle played out. Both Dragons stepped into the ring, Seto behind Blue Eyes, and Shu behind Blue Dragon, and both Dragons immediately started taking shots at each other’s human counterpart. Blue Dragon is more defensive than Blue Eyes and held off the assault for a long time, but he made the fatal mistake of targeting Seto, mistaking him as vital much like Shu. If Seto dies, Blue Eyes goes on just the same, but if Shu dies Blue Dragon is done for, and most of Blue Dragons efforts in attacking Seto were wasted. In the end, a stray blast knocked up some rubble from the Terra Kahn fight and knocked Shu unconscious, taking Blue Dragon out of the battle with him. That ended this Dragon Battle, the first battle to have Dragons fighting along with their human counterparts.
This unfortunately angered Ash Ketchum, as the bouncer stopped him at the door when he tried to participate in the Charizard V Terra Kahn battle.
Battle 4 Onyxia VS Lady Vox
This battle of two intelligent, mythical, ultra powerful, army controlling, titans of the MMO world actually came down to one question: “Does fire beat ice?” Nearly all of the arguments we saw on the forums revolved around this simple quandary. Fire melts ice, but the water would then put out a fire. Throw ice on a fire and see what happens. Hold enough ice above a fire and see what happens. Fire, Ice, Fire, Ice. It’s somewhat amusing that perhaps our two most magical and intelligent dragons were reduced to a matchstick and an ice cube.
“Onyxia. Fire melts ice. Simple as that.” –Necrofear
“…how is Fire> Ice Valid. Doesn't Ice put out fire?” –Eviljello
“For everyone who says "ice beats fire" let's do an experiment. Get two cups of water. Then make a fire. Then throw the ice into the fire. And then the water.” –Necrofear
“I think that the ice should be put through a shaver first, to simulate the effects of a breath weapon.” –LivingShadow
“Fire beating Ice is a valid point. Onyxia gets my vote.” –leeskiowns
Crazy Eh? The abilities of both of these behemoths are too much to even list. Both are masters of several forms of magic, both can fly, both can summon minions, both are rulers over vast domains of land, and both take hoards and hoards of people to take down. In addition both are iconic to their game franchise.
This battle was actually a little delayed because we first had to have our janitor clean out the stands of all the water and wet matches left over from our fans’ fire V ice experiments, but once it got underway it was epic. The dead were resurrected, plagues were spread, dragons flew in from lands far away to assist. Both dragons cast the highest level defensive spells on themselves and attacked each other both with magic and their awesome natural weapons. Fire and Ice breath was flying everywhere, and wisps of mana surrounded the stadium. Whenever Lady Vox gained the upper hand, Onyxia would pull off something unexpected and vice versa. Dark miracles the likes of which mortals have never seen stunned and shocked us. Long range or short both dragons were absolutely terrifying in their might. Blood flew everywhere, and the arena was rocked with sounds of the roars and screeches of ancient dragons in pain.
That battle was hard fought, but sadly there could only be one victor. In the end, it was not Onyxia’s elemental affinity, but her stamina that won her the day. Lady Vox, as mythical as she was, was simply too old to continue fighting, and after losing a great deal of her blood and mana, she fell, bringing perhaps one of the most epic battles of our lifetime, and perhaps of all time to a close.
….. AND YOU MISSED IT ALL BECAUSE YOU WERE TRYING TO PUT OUT YOUR LIGHTER WITH YOUR SNO CONE!!!
Well that is the end of round one. Here are the matchups for round 2 and some commentary on what we can expect to see in these matchups.

Shivan V Charizard Commentary
These two fighters come from two of the longest running TCG’s out there, and many of us can still remember the choice we made of Magic Vs Pokemon back in the day. It’s fire versus fire as both of these dragons have the ability to fly, a tremendous amount of strength, and extremely powerful fire attacks. Shivan is older than Charizard and has more experience, but Charizard is young and has more energy and fighting spirit. Shivan is much larger than Charizard, absolutely dwarfing him in size, but Charizard has access to attacks in elements other than fire, allowing him to make up the size difference in versatility. In the end, this battle is very even and will come down to the Dragon that can fight most creatively and strategically. It is yet to be seen whether experience or versatility will fuel that strategy.
Blue Eyes VS Onyxia Commentary
This battle is cunning versus power. Onyxia has access to centuries of arcane arts at her disposal, and in all aspects she is more versatile than Blue Eyes. Blue Eyes however simply has raw destructive power, ready to be unleashed. Onyxia is intelligent, while Blue Eyes has the mind of a beast, which also enters another interesting variable into this battle: hesitation. What is more powerful, the intelligence of sentience, or the instinct of an animal. Blue Eyes has limited options here and is faced with a tremendous amount of magic. Onyxia will have to outsmart Blue Eyes, debuffing, casting, and taking advantage of his lack of versatility to win. Blue Eyes on the other hand will simply have to be as aggressive as possible to try and overwhelm Onyxia by catching her off guard.
Well there you have it. Now it’s your turn. Get on our forums and tell us who you think will win round two! Stay here with TCGplayer.com as our epic Dragon Month continues.
